Damselfly (Zygoptera)

Iles des Boucherville, Montreal, July 2014

I have learned today, thanks to Wikipedia, that these long tail, four winged insects helicoptering around may not be by default dragon flies. There is another group of insects, damselflies (Zygoptera) looking very similar. Although, there are a few very easily detectable criteria for distinction.

Damselflies:

  • Eyes are separated
  • In rest, wings are hold parallel to the body
  • Fore wing are similar in shape as hind wing

Learnt this, I rushed back to check the other post, which I did a couple of months ago, with a photo of a dragon fly (reddish).

And I am relieved to see that I may have been correct with taxonomy of the reddish one. (Checkout eyes)
