Carolina Grasshopper (Dissosteira carolina)

At first, I have not seen them, but then walking along the gravel trail, they sense you coming close and jump and fly away looking similar to a butterfly. In a short distance, they settle down again and stay calm. As usual, I am everything else than an entomologist, so I had to consult bugguide.net for proper taxonomy of this species. For me they look exactly the same as the Crackling Locust, which I was able saw in Tadoussac, Quebec on the rocks along the beach. Check it out for yourself. But they are not, actually not even the same genus.
