A small bird found in most parts of the world, introduced into North America. The species prefers urban or rural settings and avoids extensive woodlands, grasslands, and deserts away from human development.

  • Haussperling (de)

Where & When to Spot

This Sparrow stays in Montreal all year long and can be seen in the streets of Montreal. I rarely see it in the parks though.

How to Identify

Preference to stay near human habitations, different from other sparrows, makes it easy to identify. Males have a dark grey cap, a black throat and spot on the breast, black eye line. Females have brown cap and grey throat and breast, olive eye line.

A common species around my home but never taken time to get a photo. I waited till spring to take a photo although the chance to get a good view with increasing vegetation is less probable.
