New Gear: Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8G
A few days ago, I received the new Nikon macro lens Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8G and I immediately headed out for testing. At first, I was disappointed about the minimal focus distance which seems to be longer than what I have been used to with my old macro lens.
It turns out though that the minimal focus distances are about the same. I looked up the data sheets of both lenses to compare. But the new lens is full frame capable and has a slightly longer focal length. In theory, I should be able to get closer shots of the subjects I am interested in with a higher resolution than I am used to. Let’s see if that will be true.
At some point, I will have a collection of photos of the same subjects taken previously with my Nikon D500/Tamron 90mm combo compared with the new Nikon Z6/Nikkor Z 105mm. For now I am happy owning again a macro lens after one year having sold the old one because the lens wasn’t working with my new camera.
Curiously, my photos taken with a macro lens usually are outperforming in views of other photos. On Unsplash, 4 of the top 5 photos are macro shots. It may be that in general macro photography is doing better or that the subjects photographed are more popular. Anyway, I don’t really have a preference for macro photography in particular. Dependent on season and location, I use what is most appropriate for the subjects I see around me.
