Best Locations and Seasons for Sightings
Although I had looked for it for many years, it was not until late February 2026 that I was able to spot a Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) for the first time. It was in Parc de la Frayère, in the forest area to the right of the road. Although this species is present year-round, it is difficult to spot because of its extraordinary camouflage and low daytime activity. Check tall pine trees near the top.
| Location | Spring | Summer | Autumn | Winter |

"x" indicates the species was observed, while "-" indicates no observation. Lack of observation doesn't necessarily imply that the species is absent. Data is derived from my park visit journals.
Identification and Similar Species
Clearly identifiable as an owl. Its remarkable features are the ear tufts, which some owls like the Barred Owl (Strix varia) lack; its size, as it is larger than any other owl in the area; and its bulky build.
